Why does wholesale & distribution hiring differ?
Wholesale and distribution sits between manufacturers and the retailers or end-buyers they supply — and the people who run it carry a very particular blend of skills. A good distribution hire has to move stock, hold margin, manage credit terms with trade customers, and keep a warehouse and a delivery fleet honest, often across multiple branches. That is a different profile from a pure retail or a pure logistics hire, even though the vocabulary overlaps.
This matters in Malaysia because distributive trade is a large, fast-moving part of the economy. The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) tracks distributive trade — which includes wholesale, retail and motor trade — as one of its headline monthly indicators, a sign of how much of the country's commercial activity flows through this sector. How do you screen distribution candidates?
We screen manually — quality over volume — so you never receive a CV flood. Every candidate is assessed against five dimensions: qualifications, interests, technical knowledge, experience, and soft skills. For wholesale and distribution roles, that assessment goes deeper than a job title, because the same title can mean very different things from one trading house to the next.
- Commercial track record. For sales and account roles, we look at the channels a candidate has actually sold into — trade, modern, traditional, horeca, e-commerce — and whether they have carried real revenue and margin responsibility, not just a title.
- Supply-chain literacy. For inventory, purchasing and planning roles, we probe real understanding of stock turns, lead times, demand planning and the cost of holding too much or too little.
- Operational grip. For branch and outlet managers, we test people leadership, the ability to run a floor, and comfort with the daily cash, stock and compliance discipline a branch demands.
- Compliance fit. We work with literacy in the Employment Act, LHDN and SST — and in distribution that matters, because Sales and Service Tax (SST) is administered through LHDN and touches how trading businesses price, invoice and account for goods. We make sure the candidates we present sit comfortably in that environment.
