Retail & supermarket recruitment, screened for the floor
Permanent store, category, operations and head-office talent for retailers across the Klang Valley — matched by people, not a CV flood.
Carriera is a JTKSM 615 licensed recruitment agency that places permanent retail and supermarket talent for chains and independents across the Klang Valley and Peninsular Malaysia — outlet supervisors, category buyers, operations and head-office roles — using a manually-screened, quality-over-volume process built for a sector that drowns in applicants.
Why is retail hiring so different?
Retail and supermarket recruitment looks easy from the outside and is anything but. Wholesale and retail trade is one of the largest employers in the Malaysian economy, and the Department of Statistics Malaysia tracks it as a headline services sub-sector in its regular Wholesale & Retail Trade releases (dosm.gov.my). That scale is exactly the problem when you are hiring: a single supervisor post can attract hundreds of applicants, most of whom will not survive a shift roster, a weekend-heavy schedule, or the reality of leading a frontline team.
We are a private employment agency that treats retail as a specialism, not an afterthought. Carriera sits within our wider recruitment practice, and this page covers the retail and supermarket side specifically — one of the industries we run dedicated searches for. The principle is simple: in a sector defined by volume, the value of an agency is its ability to ignore volume and find the few people who actually fit.
What retail roles do you place?
We place permanent white-collar and supervisory roles across the whole of a retail business — from the shop floor up to the head office. We do not handle temporary shop-floor or seasonal staffing; our work is the people who run stores, buy the products, and steer the chain.
| Function | Typical roles we place |
|---|---|
| Store & outlet | Outlet supervisor, store manager, assistant store manager, branch manager, duty manager |
| Category & merchandising | Category buyer, fresh-produce / grocery buyer, merchandiser, pricing & promotions executive, visual merchandising |
| Operations | Area manager, retail operations manager, inventory / stock controller, loss-prevention, supply-chain & replenishment |
| Head office | Procurement, finance & accounts, HR & payroll, marketing & e-commerce, business development |
To keep this grounded in what the sector is actually paying right now, here is a live example from our own jobs board. We are presently running a search for a Supermarket Outlet Supervisor in Bandar Sri Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, at a monthly band of roughly RM2,500–RM3,500, for a fresh-produce importer-retailer operating a wholesale market in the Klang Valley. The brief is instructive: at least two years in retail supermarket, wholesale or trade; safe food-handling experience in a grocery environment; fluency in English and Bahasa Malaysia; the leadership to motivate and train staff; and a realistic appetite for a six-day, long-shift roster. That single role spans operations, stock, customer service, cash handling, licensing and authority inspections — which is exactly why screening on a CV alone fails in retail.
How do you screen retail talent without drowning in CVs?
By refusing to forward unscreened applicants. Quality over volume is our core differentiator everywhere, but in retail it is the entire value proposition — a sector this open will bury you in applications, and the job of a good agency is to read past them.
For every retail brief we assess each shortlisted candidate against the things a CV never shows:
- Roster realism. Six-day weeks, split and long shifts, weekends and public holidays are normal in retail. We confirm a candidate genuinely accepts the schedule before you spend an interview slot on them.
- Frontline leadership. Store and outlet roles live or die on the ability to motivate, train and hold a frontline team — we probe real examples, not job-title seniority.
- Sector-specific compliance. Supermarket and fresh-produce roles often carry food-handling, hygiene and business-licensing duties, and frequently liaise with authorities during inspections. We screen for that exposure where the role demands it.
- Language and floor command. Retail in Malaysia runs on English and Bahasa Malaysia across a diverse team and customer base; we confirm working fluency where the role needs it.
- Stability. Retail churns. We look for candidates whose history suggests they will stay, so you are not re-hiring the same seat in six months.
We also work with literacy in the rules that govern retail employment — the Employment Act, working-hours and rest-day provisions, and statutory contributions — drawing on guidance from the Ministry of Human Resources (mohr.gov.my). For a fuller breakdown of the obligations that apply to your store teams, see our Employment Act employer guide. Hiring within that framework matters more in retail than almost anywhere, because shift work and rest-day rules are where compliance most often slips.
What does a retail search cost and involve?
It follows the same six-step process as the rest of our recruitment work — understand your business, search, assess, shortlist, manage the interviews, and close on an accepted offer — tuned for the realities of a store environment. You brief the role and the salary band; we run a manually-screened search and present only candidates worth your time.
We do not publish a fixed placement fee, because the right structure depends on the role, the salary band and the search involved — a head-office category buyer and a single-outlet supervisor are not the same job. We agree terms upfront before any search begins. If you want to understand how agency fees typically work in Malaysia before you brief us, our guide on recruitment agency fees in Malaysia explains the model in plain English.
And because Carriera is a small team, you deal directly with the consultant running your search — not an account manager passing you down a queue. That is the same reason our screening holds up: the person reading the floor is the person who briefed you.
